Under normal circumstances this guide would cover a standard work-visa process. It's important to be direct instead: since 2022, sanctions, flight suspensions, visa restrictions, and international banking disruptions have made working seasonally in Russia impractical or inaccessible for most Western passport holders, independent of whatever the formal immigration rules say on paper.
Visa Policy: What You Can and Cannot Do (Formal Rules)
Under Russia's standard system, working legally requires a work visa, sponsored by a Russian employer who has obtained a labour permit/quota allocation on your behalf — a bureaucratic, employer-driven process even before recent disruptions. Tourist visas do not permit paid work.
Practical Reality for Seasonaires
Most Western governments currently advise against travel to Russia, many airlines don't fly there, and standard international banking/card payments largely don't work for foreign visitors. Even seasonaires who might clear the formal work-visa hurdle would face major practical obstacles getting there, getting paid, and getting home.
