The Mountain
Kaunertal is a glacier resort, which means you're looking at a genuinely long season—230 days running from October through June—but you need to be realistic about terrain variety. With just 1.38 km² of skiable area and 963 vertical metres, this is compact; you'll ski the same runs repeatedly, and four months could feel repetitive if you're the type who needs constant novelty. That said, the 311 cm average annual snowfall is excellent, and glacier skiing means consistent snow quality even late in the season when lower resorts are struggling. The terrain is beginner and intermediate-focused—there's a dedicated learning area and the slopes are mellow—so if you're progressing from beginner to intermediate, you'll have plenty of runway. If you're an advanced rider looking for steep couloirs and challenging terrain, you'll find some off-piste and a new black run, but this isn't a destination built for you; you'd likely get bored, and you'd need to supplement with touring or trips to bigger resorts.
Living There
You'll be based in the valley—Feichten, Kaunertal village, or Weisseepitze—not at the ski centre itself, which sits at 2,750 metres with no accommodation. Groceries are cheap at around €65 per week, and the valley is accessible by public bus or taxi (roughly 25 minutes from Zams/Landeck station), so you're not completely cut off. However, "the valley" isn't a vibrant town; it's a quiet, rural area where you'll need to travel for everyday amenities, and the nearest international airport (Innsbruck) is 119 km away, making getting home mid-season or flying in friends logistically involved. Staff accommodation exists but isn't widely advertised with specific pricing; you'll need to contact the resort directly. If you're someone who thrives on small-town life and doesn't mind isolation, this works; if you need walkable shops, restaurants, and easy transport links, you'll find it limiting.
The Seasonaire Scene
Around 100+ employees work across the glacier and valley operations, making this a genuinely small community where you'll know most people by Christmas. Jobs centre on ski instruction (Top Schischule is the main employer), lift operations, PistenBully driving, snow grooming, and mountain hospitality—all legitimate seasonal roles with staff accommodation available in the valley. The worker base is predominantly German and Central European, reflecting the visitor demographics, so English isn't widely spoken; German language skills are a real advantage. The social scene is low-key and deliberately quiet—Kaunertal is one of the few Austrian resorts without traditional après-ski bars—so if you're after big nights out and a buzzing seasonaire party scene, look elsewhere. This resort suits people learning to ski or progressing through intermediate levels, and it suits those who want solitude and focused skiing over crowds and nightlife; it doesn't suit advanced riders seeking steep terrain or seasonaires prioritising a lively social calendar.
