The Mountain
You'll have plenty of vertical to work with—1,400m of drop across 3.02km² of skiable terrain—and the 461cm average annual snowfall means the snow quality will stay consistent throughout a four-month season. The 143-day season runs from early December through mid-April, giving you a solid window to settle in and develop a rhythm. However, the terrain itself skews gentle: Lech is a beginner-to-intermediate playground with wide, rolling blue runs, so if you're an advanced skier looking to progress on challenging piste, you'll likely find the daily skiing repetitive after a couple of months. The connected Ski Arlberg network does offer access to St. Anton's steeper terrain, but that requires a commute. The real advantage here is consistency and reliability rather than terrain variety—you won't get bored because of snow or season length, but you might get bored because the mountain doesn't demand much of you.
Living in Lech Zurs
Lech itself is a proper Austrian town with shops and everyday amenities, though Zürs (where you may be based) is essentially a luxury enclave of just 150 inhabitants—think high-end hotels rather than a functioning village. Groceries are reasonable at around €45 per week, but rent will be your challenge: the area is exclusive and expensive, and finding private housing independently is extremely difficult without German language skills and local connections. The good news is that staff accommodation is typically included with seasonal jobs, though it's described as basic. Innsbruck airport is 116km away (roughly two hours by car or shuttle), which is manageable but not immediate. You're in a quieter, more refined corner of Austria—don't expect the party-town energy of somewhere like Banff or Chamonix.
The Seasonaire Scene
Most seasonal work here is in hospitality—waitering, kitchen roles, reception, and maintenance in five-star hotels—plus ski school and lift operations, and German language skills will help you land better positions. Staff accommodation comes with most jobs, which is essential since finding your own place is nearly impossible. The worker demographic skews Eastern European, and the overall vibe is more transactional than social; people come here to earn money in a professional environment rather than to have a season-long party. You'll need an EU passport (or be from New Zealand) to work legally. If you're an expert skier hoping to improve, this isn't the place—the terrain is too gentle and many seasonaires work split shifts (8am–7pm) that leave little time for skiing anyway. But if you're comfortable with intermediate skiing, value a relaxed and professional atmosphere, and want to maximize earnings in a luxury hospitality setting, Lech Zürs is a strong choice.
