THE SKIING

Milky Way lives up to its name as a genuine network: 400 km of lift-connected terrain across Italy and France, with a 1,473 m max vertical drop and 237 cm average annual snowfall. You're not confined to one peak or one town—you can ski from Piedmont into France and back in a single day if conditions and mood align. The skiing suits intermediate and advanced riders best; terrain is consistent across the network (all towns rate 6.2/10 for gnarliness), with solid beginner zones but nothing that screams "beginner paradise." The area hosted the 2006 Winter Olympics, which means you'll find Olympic-grade infrastructure and some genuinely technical descents, though you won't be chasing one famous run—the appeal is breadth and the ability to explore without repetition over a full season.

THE TOWNS

Sauze d'Oulx is the social hub: 7.5/10 nightlife, cheapest salary in the network (EUR 1,150/month), and the most obvious choice if you want après-ski culture without leaving your base. Rent is EUR 650/month, beer EUR 5.50.

Montgenèvre, just over the French border, matches Sauze's nightlife (7.5/10) but costs more—EUR 750/month rent, EUR 1,550/month salary, EUR 6.50 beer—and appeals to seasonaires who want slightly more sophistication and don't mind the premium. It's the most expensive town here, but also the most cosmopolitan.

San Sicario splits the difference: 6/10 nightlife, EUR 650/month rent, EUR 1,350/month salary, EUR 5 beer. It's quieter than Sauze but not remote, and it's a solid middle ground if you want access without the party scene.

Cesana Torinese, Claviere, and Pragelato are the quiet options. All three sit at 3–4.5/10 nightlife, EUR 650/month rent, EUR 1,350/month salary, and EUR 5 beer. They're genuinely small villages where you'll know everyone by week two. Cesana has the highest nightlife rating (4.5/10) of the three and feels slightly less isolated. Claviere and Pragelato are for people who came to ski, not to party.

Sestriere is the outlier: compact terrain (788 m vertical on its own), but it's the most Olympic-legacy town and has a distinct identity. Rent EUR 650/month, salary EUR 1,200/month (lowest after Sauze), beer EUR 5.50. It's quieter (5.5/10 nightlife) but has more infrastructure than the tiny villages.

WHICH TOWN SHOULD YOU PICK

If you want the most active nightlife and don't mind a small-town scene, base yourself in Sauze d'Oulx or Montgenèvre—both hit 7.5/10 and are genuinely set up for seasonaires. If you're on the tightest budget, Sauze d'Oulx has the lowest salary (EUR 1,150/month) but all the Italian towns match at EUR 650 rent, so the difference is marginal. If you want quiet after a long day and don't care about bars, Claviere or Pragelato will feel like a retreat; Cesana Torinese is the compromise—still small but slightly less isolated. If you want a bit of both (some nightlife, some peace), San Sicario or Sestriere are the middle grounds. Montgenèvre is the pick if budget isn't tight and you want the most "resort town" feel.

GETTING AROUND

Turin airport (Caselle) is 90 minutes from most towns and handles international flights; it's the main gateway. Grenoble airport in France is roughly equidistant for some western towns. Turin city itself is 1.5–2 hours away and has proper supermarkets, hospitals, and services if you need to leave the mountains for a day. Most towns have small shops and cafés but aren't self-sufficient for a full grocery run—plan accordingly.
